Family Garden - Completed Winter 2010

Existing site: The garden to the rear of the house was mostly laid to lawn. Beyond the hedge are extensive views across the flood plain of the River Trent. The existing terrace was well-positioned and was retained.

Client brief: To make the garden more interesting, improve the view from the breakfast room and incorporate a water feature, wildlife friendly planting and an area for alpine plants, whilst retaining some lawn for the children and animals to use.

Design solution: The garden was essentially divided into two parts with a more formal area laid out along the sightline from the breakfast room. This gave year-round interest in the foreground and framed the view beyond the hedge. A circular pond formed the focal point of this part of the garden. The remainder was left as lawn with some re-shaping of the flower borders proposed as a second phase of development.
