Portfolio > A sunken garden design
A modern, clean-lined extension resulted in a sunken area suitable for a courtyard garden. The main garden areas are on 3 different levels.
The different levels need to be reconciled and access between the areas needs to be considered. The courtyard should look attractive through the huge picture windows of the new building at all times of the year. The overall appearance would be contemporary with a linear/angular design.
Retaining walls were built around a terrace paved with blue-grey granite. The walls were faced with natural stone. The steps made a feature at each end with bull-nosed treads and mitred corners. Glass and metal handrails completed the contemporary look. The fence will be covered with a clipped yew hedge to act as a foil for the planting in front of it.
