Portfolio > A garden design with Mediterranean colour
Existing site:
The site faces north-west and falls away by about 3m from the house. There are 2 existing terraces below the house and steps between the two. Access to the rest of the garden from here was precarious.
Client brief:
Seating areas for daytime, with table and chairs, and evening entertaining around a fire-pit were required. The silver birch tree should be retained and the garden should have clean lines and a modern feel. Preferably with a touch of drama.
Design solution:
The lower terrace was extended to provide a sufficiently large seating area and both this and the upper terrace were re-surfaced with smooth natural sandstone. The retaining wall between the two was coloured a bold Mediterranean terracotta. This provides a perfect foil for planting with dramatic foliage and a scheme with blue and purple flowers. In phase 2 a glass balustrade will be added for safety. At the far end of the garden a simple paved area catches the evening sun and is perfect for sitting around a fire-pit.
